Philippus II

Marcus Iulius Philippus was probably born in the year 237. He was the son of Marcia Otacilia Severa and Marcus Iulius Philippus. When his father was officially accepted by the senat as emperor he was elevated to the rank of Caesar. After his father in 247 returned from his campaigns in Dacia and along the Danube border the 10 year old boy was elevated to the rank of Augustus, probably in the month of august. Beginning with the local year 8 the coins for Philip II show him as Augustus. These coins probably were struck in the beginning of the local year 9 with reverse dies from the year 8. Also during the local year 9 coins were struck in his name. Around august/september 249 his father died as a result of the battle against Messius Quintus Decius who was elected emperor by the troops in Pannonia and Moesia Superior. When te news of his death reached Rome Philip II was killed by the praetorian guard, he supposedly died in his mothers arms.

On some coins of Viminacium his name is given as IMP M M IVLIVS PHILIPPUS, with twice the initials M. This possibly is a mistake or his official name must have been MARCUS MARINUS IULIUS PHILIPPUS. The name MARINUS in that case could have been inherited from his fathers side, namely from his grandfather.

The coins of Philip from Viminacium

Denominations struck: as, dupondius and sestertius.

The asses have a portrait with a laurel wreath while the dupondii have a portrait with the emperor wearing a radiate crown. The difference in weight between asses and dupondii is sometimes very small. Their difference in value probably came forth from the materials used. The sestertii in their turn are bigger and heavier and the emperor has a portrait with laurel wreath.

Used notations of the local year:

AN VI, used from july 244 until july 245.
AN VII, used from july 245 until july 246.
AN VIII, used from july 246 until july 247.
AN VIIII, used from july 247 until july 248.
AN X, nothing was struck.
AN XI, prabably nothing was struck in the name of Philip II.
